Individual Action Guide
1. Vote in Every Election
- Register early. Help others register.
- Focus especially on local races—school boards, DAs, and state legislatures shape national power.
2. Stay Informed, Not Overwhelmed
3. Speak Up Locally
- Attend town halls.
- Write to reps, sign petitions, and use social media to advocate for rule of law and voting rights.
4. Support Pro-Democracy Causes
- Donate or volunteer for groups like the ACLU, Protect Democracy, and League of Women Voters.
5. Challenge Disinformation
- Gently correct friends/family sharing conspiracy theories.
- Use empathy + facts, not shame.
Educators & Schools
1. Teach Civics and History Honestly
- Emphasize how democratic institutions function and fail.
- Include case studies (e.g. fall of Weimar Germany, civil rights era, Jan. 6) with context.
2. Encourage Critical Media Literacy
- Help students recognize propaganda, bots, and biased sources.
- Analyze real vs manipulated headlines and memes.
3. Promote Civil Dialogue
- Create space for respectful disagreement and complex discussion.
- Model how to disagree without dehumanizing.
4. Celebrate Civic Engagement
- Encourage service projects, mock elections, and debates.
- Highlight youth-led movements (e.g. March for Our Lives, Sunrise Movement).
Organizations & Communities
1. Build Diverse Coalitions
Form alliances across race, class, political and religious lines focused on shared democratic values.
2. Host Forums & Panels
- Public events on democracy, disinformation, or voting rights can educate and energize communities.
3. Protect Marginalized Groups
Authoritarianism often targets the vulnerable. Support immigrants, LGBTQ+, and racial justice orgs.
4. Prepare for Civil Resistance if Needed
-
Peaceful protest, boycotts, and walkouts have historically stopped democratic erosion (e.g. Poland’s Solidarity, Serbia’s Otpor!).
5. Partner with Local Media
- Strengthen local journalism through sponsorships, interviews, and press access.
The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.
